2021 was a great year for animation and even brought forth some interesting romantic subplots. Adding a little romance is one of the oldest tricks in fiction, but love triangles are a fun twist on a typical romance story that can spice things up and inspire fans to fantasize about their favorites.
Love triangles can be used for comic effect or to intensify the plot. Often the best cartoon love triangles involve the protagonist, but there are also some fantastic ones with supporting characters. Regardless, each one adds a funky zest to the story.
danny phantom One of the most beloved cartoons of the 2000s. The main trio of Danny, Sam and Tucker create a great and fun group of characters for kids to relate to.
Danny and Sam’s relationship developed to be romantic throughout the show, but Sam had few contestants throughout the series. Initially, it was Paulina, but part-time ghost hunters Valerie and Danny develop a slight romance through the series. This love triangle could have been expanded a bit more, but it was intense as long as it lasted.

Has appeared in several iterations of the three X Men cartoons, including X Men, wolverine and X MenAnd X-Men: Evolution. The actual romance between Wolverine and Jeanne varied depending on the versions, and thankfully this was completely eliminated in versions where Jean and Cyclops were depicted as teenagers.
The Butch Hartman cartoons always did a solid job of including funny depictions of childhood crushes without making those crushes a part of the show.
The Fairly OddParents Two decidedly somewhat one-sided crushes: Timmy’s crush on Trixie and Tutti’s crush on Timmy. The two crushes rarely intersect in the plot, but both play important roles in Timmy’s adventures. He often had wild desires or went out of his way to chase tricks and avoid Tutti.
There was some intrusion from a few different characters, namely the Flame Princess, in the bubblegum/finn/marceline love triangle. The love triangle is interrupted slightly by Finn and Bubblegum’s only real two-way romantic elements, when Bubblegum is in its younger form. Once she returns to normal, things become particularly bubblegum/marceline focused.
Total Drama Island and in the upcoming series total drama The franchise had a fun cast of characters, but the original had some great relationships.
Duncan and Courtney were the primary relationship in the triangle, with Duncan and Gwen frequently asking “will they or will they not” questions throughout the series. The love triangle ends in a somewhat normal way: Gwen and Courtney are out of the equation for both of them as Duncan’s close friends.
Diane/Peanut Butter/BoJack Swirl
Bojack Horseman is arguably one of the best cartoons of all time, and Season 1 primarily revolves around the love triangle between the Titanic characters and their work partners: Mr. Peanutbutter and Diane.
The love triangle in the first season is relatively one-sided. Peanutbutter and Diane are in love and engaged halfway through the season. BoJack, on the other hand, quickly falls in love with Diana and eventually falls completely in love with her, even if she’s not interested in him. BoJack’s actions have negative consequences throughout the series, and his feelings for Diane are part of that.
Jimmy / Cindy / Nikki
Jimmy Neutron Titanic follows the boy genius as well as his friends Carl and Sheen. Also among the main characters is Jimmy’s main academic rival and friend: Cindy.

It is always interesting to see love triangles where the protagonist is not in the center of the action. Even more interesting is a complete love triangle, where all the members had some romantic involvement.
Korra/Mako/Asami is one of the only true “perfect” love triangles in popular fiction. Mako and Korra had a lot of “will they or won’t” at the beginning of the series, with Mako initially serving as the center point of the triangle. Eventually, each of the three members became romantically involved at some point, with Korra and Asami being the endgame couple.
