You never know where you will find the life-changing spark of inspiration. For Cheryl Eisen, it was on his mother’s couch.
For some time in the ’90s and early on, Eisen was running his own successful company. But, in the midst of the dot-com bubble crash, his executive search firm went down and the entrepreneur suddenly became unemployed with a difficult job history. “I was broke in my 30s, living on my mom’s couch and had to completely reinvent myself,” she said in an exclusive interview with E! News. News. “Nobody would hire me because I had a CEO on my resume and I didn’t go to college.”
While he had already tried a variety of gigs—art director, graphic designer, and Macintosh software teacher, to name a few—Eisen turned to real estate, secured his license and secured a position at an agency. where the commission was his income. Once a shrewd businesswoman, she stumbled across a saturated market after receiving an idea from an unexpected source. “I was watching HGTV during my unemployment days, and I saw this show called the staggers,” she recalled, “and no one in New York was doing that at the time. And I thought, ‘This is really neat. Maybe I can become a real estate selling platform.'”
The New York City native, who grew up with an interest in art, decided to merge her two worlds. “I was creative. I had a good eye for things. I had no experience, but the only way to be able to compete in New York real estate, a very competitive real estate market, was to get listings. Had to be differentiable,” she explained. “And I saw it as an opportunity.”
While Eisen had to bear the cost of staging the spaces himself, he drew inspiration from a book Kelly HoppenLet’s get into the interior design and work. The effect was immediate. “The first time I did it, it was so successful. Property fully asked for, all cash, fully furnished,” she said, “where the seller has been trying to sell it himself for like a year with no success. Was staged, so that was a great change. And the brokers took notice and said, ‘Wow, what is this staged? Can you stage my listing too?’ And so I was staging not only my own listings — and I got a lot of business out of it — but also listings from other brokers and other agents. And so, it really started from there.”
