Rapper, singer and songwriter Drake finally released a statement on the tragic events that happened at the Astroworld Festival in Houston on November 5, when a mass crush killed eight people and injured dozens more.
The Canadian rapper, who appeared as a surprise guest during festival founder Travis Scott’s headline set, took to Instagram on Monday night to issue a statement. Drake wrote, “I’ve spent the last few days trying to wrap my mind around this devastating tragedy. I hate to take to this forum to express delicate feelings like sadness, but this is where I find myself.”
“My heart is broken for the families and friends who lost their lives and anyone who is suffering. I will continue to pray for all of them, and serve me in any way I can. God be with you all,” he said.
Scott said on Saturday he was “absolutely devastated” by the tragedy. His statement posted on social media continued, “My prayers go out to the families and everyone affected by what happened at the Astroworld festival.” “My full support to Houston PD as they continue to see the tragic loss of life.”
His partner, Kylie Jenner, said on Sunday that they were both “unknown of any fatalities” until the incident ended. The reality TV star and mogul said the couple was “devastated” that at least eight people were killed in the crowd.
Jenner’s half-sister Kim Kardashian West also posted a statement to her Instagram Story on Monday night, saying she was “absolutely heartbroken for those who were lost and hurt at Astroworld.”
According to Houston’s fire department, about 50,000 people were present at the NRG Park concert on Friday night, when trouble began to escalate after 9 p.m. It was not immediately clear what prompted the crowd to march toward the stage during Scott’s performance, but officials said they would review footage from drones and on the ground. Scott has promised a refund for all ticketholders to the festival and said he would cover funeral costs for the families of the victims.
On Sunday, Texas attorney Thomas J. Henry filed a lawsuit on behalf of one of the victims against Scott, Drake, Live Nation and NRG Stadium. Drake did not comment on the lawsuit.
